On the 12.11.1943 the Soviets attacked the boundary between the Grenadier-Regiment 460 and the neighbouring division on the left, and successfully broke through. This resulted in the Regiment being outflanked from the left. The Regiment, under the temporary command of Major Strohm, defended the old positions for 3 days. Finally the regimental command post was pulled back on the 15.11.1943. Strohm and a small rearguard covered the withdrawal, finally pulling out of the Soviet grip on the following day. By this action they were able to save the regimental staff from the attackers, and Strohm was awarded the Knight's Cross in recognition of his efforts during this hard fighting.

The Soviet Operation Bagration struck the 260. Infanterie-Division on the 24.06.1944. Two days later the Division started to pull back, with Grenadier-Regiment 470 (commanded by Strohm) forming the rearguard. On the 27.06.1944 the Regiment pushed through the Soviet-held village of Starosselje in a textbook attack, and thereby enabled the Division to carry on to Gorodok. After days of fighting retreat the area of Velikij-Bos / Belaja Lusha was reached on the 05.07.1944. Here it was necessary to break through the seventh and final Soviet blocking position. The Kampfgruppe Grenadier-Regiment 470 with elements of Pionier-Bataillon 653 reached the swampy area around Petrovichi, and they managed to reach the German lines in small groups. For his role in leading his men during the long retreat, Strohm was awarded the Oakleaves.

Awarded posthumously.
