During the night of the 05.-06.02.1945 the Grenadier-Regiment 24 had the mission of recapturing the villages of Dixen and Gut Weskeim. In the ensuing house-to-house combat, Josef Weiß showed outstanding bravery and skill in the attack, and the attack objectives of his Kompanie were quickly achieved largely thanks to his efforts. However Weiß himself was severely wounded in this battle and later died of his injuries. His achievements were recognized with the posthumous bestowal of the Knight's Cross.
