Wentscher was promoted to Leutnant in 1915, and earned four awards including the EKI in WWI.
He was a career officer who joined the Wehrmacht as Hauptmann in 1934, became Kompanie-chef in Art.Rgt.13 in 1936, and after his promotion to Major became Adjudant of the 13. Infanterie-Division in 1938.
He fought in this function during the Polish campaign, earning him the EK2 Spange, and in the Western campaign, where he was awarded the EK1 Spange.
After the conversion of the 13.ID into the 13. Panzer-Division he fought on the Eastern Front as Oberstleutnant and commander of the Artillerie-Regiment 13. Severely wounded in his leg on 13th of October 1941, he was awarded a very early DKiG on 1st of December 1941.
He was unfit for further front service and finished his war as Oberst in the Oberkommando des Heeres.
