Emil Barakling was with the Police service until 1931. In 1935 he joined the Luftwaffe and was selected for officer training. In 1939 he was promoted to Leutnant and a year later to Oberleutnant. He received his pilot training at Gabbert, Prenzlau and Neubrandenburg.
After he received his Flugzeugführerabzeichen, he became a transport pilot on the Ju-52/3m on the Eastern Front. He received his bomber pilot training at Tutow and was transferred to KG 27 "Boelcke" in February1942. In March 1942 he was promoted to Hauptmann and later commanded Kampf-Geschwader 12 and was acting commander of I.Gruppe. Between March and December 1944 he commanded the reinforced Kampf-Geschwader 14. He was shot down in May 1944 and reported missing in action, but managed to return back with his complete crew. After the transformation of KG 27 to a fighter role, Emil Barakling commanded a Luftwaffe Ground Unit until the end of the war. He flew a total of 203 missions and was finally promoted to Major while in the US POW camp Percha on 28th June 1945.
In July 1945 he was released and returned to the German Police in 1947.
