On the 30.10.1944, during the First Battle of Courland, the I./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 5 was pushed back by the Soviets in its sector north of Autz. This created a danger that the commanding high ground between Ciruli and Pilsinski would be lost.

Realizing that the loss of this terrain would enable the enemy to advance into the area beyond it uncontested, the regimental commander Major Bischoff decided to stand firm around his regimental command post, which was located on a hill near Ciruli. Personally manning an MG, he and his ragtag of soldiers managed to repulse all attacks here. Bischoff would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this achievement.
