Awarded for the successes of his Gruppe during the Balkans campaign and Operation Barbarossa. In the former campaign the unit especially distinguished itself while supporting the breakthrough of German forces through the Rupel pass, in missions against the British evacuation fleet in the Megara bay and during the operation against Crete. Here his aircraft sunk the British destroyers “Greyhound” (22.05.1941), “Kelly” and “Kashmir” (23.05.1941).
