On the 23.06.1941 Oberfeldwebel Blaich commanded the point Zug of the 12./Panzer-Regiment 6. On this day he and his troops managed to capture the Jasiolda bridge, continued to pursue the Soviets beyond it and likewise seized a bridge over the Szczara river. During this bold drive Blaich personally destroyed 26 Russian tanks, 16 artillery pieces and a few anti-tank guns. He thus had a major share in the swift advance of the XXIV. Armee-Korps.

He would subsequently be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
