Awarded on:
June 9th, 1944
Awarded for his distinguished wartime service, and in particular his actions as a battalion commander during the fighting for Cassino. On the 02.02.1944 his Bataillon was positioned in the German line around Calvary Hill (Hill 593). On the night of the 09-10.02.1944, Major Kratzert led a shock troop against the American forces who had occupied Hill 593. Just after midnight a fierce two hour battle commenced, which saw Kratzert and his men in control of the vital position when the dust settled.

This act meant that the 4th Indian Division had lost their springboard for their planned offensive. Kratzert would thus be recognized appropriately for his success, which had far-reaching implications for the situation in the area.
