Trained as a Beobachter in Nahaufklärung units, he saw action in France 1940, then on the northern sector of the Eastern Front (Lithuania, Estonia, Leningrad), where he earned his EKII. A new series of awards followed mid 1942 when he was deployed with Nahaufklärungs-Staffel 7 (H) / 32 on the Southern sector of the Eastern front, earning him the EKI and two flying clasps. Major awards followed in 1943: the Frontflugspange für Aufklärer in Gold, the Ehrenpokal and the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold awarded on 12th of July 1943. In February 1944 he was taken away from the front, tos erve with the Fliegerbildschule Hildesheim and later the Erganzungs-Nahaufklärungsgruppe.
