Biography
Helmut Lipfert, previously Führer in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (State Labor Service) joined the Nachrichten-Abteilung (Intelligence Service) within the 1. Panzer-Division (Armored Division). In his capacity of Unteroffizier (NCO) he took part in the campaign against Poland in September 1939.
Early 1941 he enlisted in the Luftwaffe and was trained as a fighterpilot. June 16th, 1942, he was appointed Kriegsoffizier-Anwärter (Candidate Warofficer) with the rank of Feldwebel (Sergeant) and was promoted to Leutnant (Lieutenant) on August 1st, 1942. December 16th, 1942 he was posted to 6. JagdGeschwader 52 ( JG, Fightersquadron) on the Eastern front. Janaury 30th, 1943, he scored his first kill on his 18th operational flight. September 5th, 1943, he had already scored 20 kills and was promoted to Staffelkapitän (Flight captain) of 6/JG 52. October 8th, 1943 he scored 5 kills in one operational flight. When he went on leave on Janaury 25th, 1944 he had reached a total of 88 kills. After his return he scored his 90th kill on April 8th, 1944. At the end of 1944 his score had risen to 166.
February 15th, 1945 he was promoted to Kommandeur of I/JG 53 (Wingcommander) in Hungary. After the disbandment of I/JG 53 he was again posted to II/JG 52 where he took command of 7 Staffel (squadron) and the whole Gruppe. (Wing)
