The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Sigel received the Knight’s Cross…
“Hauptmann Sigel led his Stuka Gruppe with great success during the campaign in Poland. This commendable performance continued during the campaign in the west, where he contributed to the successes of his Gruppe as a result of the ceaseless readiness for duty he demonstrated while leading at the point of his unit.
He and his Gruppe greatly facilitated the offensive of our ground troops in the Libramont—Givet area by attacking enemy troop assemblies in southern Belgium. The Gruppe went on to achieve success during attacks on the Maginot Line south of Sedan, as well as during airstrikes against enemy tanks near Laon and against columns near La Fére, St. Vel, Lenz, Arras, Bethune and Amiens (where the Gruppe also played an important role in repulsing enemy armoured attacks). Also notable were attacks against enemy destroyers southwest of Calais and the Dunkirk harbour.
In all this time Hauptmann Sigel gave a great example of boldness to his crews as a result of his own personal example, and his bravery was a key factor that enabled operational success.”
