Walter Zellot was killed in action on September 10th, 1942 when his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 "Schwarze 10" was shot down near Stalingrad by Soviet anti aircraft artillery.
By this date he had completed 296 missions and was credited with 85 aircraft shot down.

“Furthermore, upon the recommendation of the supreme commander of the Luftwaffe, Reichsmarschall Göring, the Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Leutnant Zellot, pilot in a Jagdgeschwader. Leutnant Walter Zellot has repeatedly distinguished himself in both the Eastern campaign and in the conflict against Britain. So far he has achieved 48 aerial victories.”
