Awarded in recognition of the successes achieved both by himself and his platoon. Between 13-15.03.1942 Spielmann and his platoon destroyed 34 enemy tanks (including six heavy ones), disabled 2 more, and also eliminated an enemy artillery battery and AT gun. With this Spielmann raised his personal total of tanks destroyed to 35. Not only this, but Spielmann was also able to intervene decisively against the attempted enemy breakthroughs in the same time period, on the 14th near Koi Assan and on the 15th west of Korpetsch.

Awarded following the successes of his brigade in the third battle of Courland. During this battle the 202nd participated in the most critical battle sectors south of Frauenburg and north of Doblen, and in three days destroyed 44 enemy tanks and 10 AT guns. With this the total no. of tanks destroyed by the brigade rose to 1017.

The award of the Oakleaves was also in recognition of Spielmann's personal successes. During the fighting in Courland he always led his Sturmgeschütze from the front, and by the time he received the award he had raised his tally of enemy tanks destroyed to 48.
