On the morning of the 30.01.1945 his gun was protecting a Bataillon command post when it came under attack by the Soviets on three sides. In the ensuing battle Schuster single-handedly knocked out 5 out of a group of 7 Soviet tanks that had broken through within the space of 13 minutes, as well as 2 trucks with limbered anti-tank guns. He then engaged the attacking Soviet troops with his Pak and was able to take 21 prisoners. For successfully engaging and thwarting this attack, Schuster was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
