Awarded for his outstanding combat achievements during the autumn of 1944 in the area between the Ozenna and Dukla passes. He distinguished himself in particular in the days 06.-08.09.1944 near Piorkow and during his company's capture of Hill 688 in October of that year. Despite fierce Soviet fire from neighbouring heights the hill was captured and then held against repeated Soviet attempts to recapture it (which on some days numbered as high as 8).
