“Kapitänleutnant Bätge, commander of a Schnellbootsflottille, has achieved great successes with his subordinated ships. Within the space of a half-year his unit sunk 90500 GRT worth of enemy merchant shipping on top of other successful operations. His personal bravery and leadership qualities have brought about exemplary battlefield feats and made his Flottille into one of the most successful ones in the fleet.”
The following Wehrmachtbericht excerpt, dated 25.11.1941, describes one of the most notable achievements of his unit…
“Schnellboote under the leadership of Flottille commander Kapitänleutnant Bätge attacked a heavily escorted convoy off the coast of Britain. Amidst heavy combat with British destroyers, the unit sunk a total of four heavily laden merchant ships with 16500 GRT (including a tanker with 6500 GRT). All boats were able to return to their bases undamaged.”
