tDuring the middle of September 1942 the Soviets attacked the positions of the 30. Infanterie-Division (located southeast of Lake Ilmen) with strong tank and artillery forces. They succeeded in capturing a commanding hill during this time, and by doing so they threatened a forward strongpoint of the Division.
With this in mind, Oberleutnant Bladt made the decision to retake his observation position on the hill with a handful of artillerymen and Grenadiers. He broke into the positions on the hill with his men following a bombardment by friendly artillery. The Soviets were thrown back after a hard fight, with the result that their efforts to encircle the Division’s strongpoint were prevented.
Bladt was subsequently awarded the Knight’s Cross for this as well as for distinguishing himself as the soul of the defense in the following days at the same position.
