The following wartime excerpt describes why Boineburg-Lengsfeld was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberst Freiherr von Boineburg-Lengsfeld has always been a calm and brave leader of his Brigade, and he has particularly distinguished himself during difficult combat situations through his personal presence in the foremost line (i.e. Dyle Position, Forèt de Mormal). It was he alone who brought about success for the 4. Panzer-Division at the La Bassée canal (north of Béthune) on the 27.05.1940. His personal influence enabled a penetration into the canal positions and a subsequent pursuit up to the Lille—Armentiéres road, which in turn prevented the French forces in Lille from retreating to the west.”
