The following wartime excerpt describes why Book was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“On the 24.10.1941 Oberleutnant Book succeeded in capturing Hill 83.2, which was located north of Lushne in thickly wooded terrain. He then held it for several hours against attacks by two Russian companies with only one Zug of his own. By doing so he enabled the neighbouring Division to complete an encirclement of enemy forces, and in the process he added another feat of bravery to his distinguished service record.”
