Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Oberst (Colonel)
Unit:
Kommandeur, Infanterie-Regiment 274, 94. Infanterie-Division, Heer
Awarded on:
January 20th, 1943
Awarded for his Regiment’s achievements during the battle of Stalingrad. During September 1942 his unit captured the grain silo in the south of the city. However it achieved even more impressive feats later that year, after the city had been surrounded. On the 31.12.1942 it delivered a particularly impressive success by holding Hill 93.2 (the so-called “Pilz”) against a much larger attacking Soviet force. The loss of this hill would have enabled the Soviets to take control over all of northern Stalingrad.
