The following wartime excerpt describes why Budäus was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 09.04.1940 Oberleutnant Budäus’s MG-Zug (of the 4./Infanterie-Regiment 307) was the only unit to swiftly get to the Norwegian military harbour of Horten out of the formations assigned to capture this facility. Despite the great numerical inferiority of his Kampfgruppe, as well as the losses incurred, the commander’s aggressive conduct resulted in a total success being achieved against a much larger enemy force. The decisively important military harbour was captured. 120 officers, 1100 NCOs and men as well as the various arsenals, batteries, etc. were captured.”
