Awarded the Knight's Cross for his brave leadership of a Flak Batterie near Gotenhafen (now Gdynia) in early 1945. He and his Flak guns (Batterie Sagorsch) resisted heavy Soviet attacks for several days, inflicting heavy tank and infantry losses. In doing so they helped cover the evacuation by sea of German soldiers and civilians, and for this contribution Witt was recognized appropriately.
