The following wartime excerpt describes why Bürger was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberleutnant Bürger has outstandingly distinguished himself throughout the entire eastern campaign. During the defensive fighting for Wolubujewka (28 km north of Belgorod) he served as the soul of the resistance as a Bataillon commander starting on the 17.02.1942. Always present in the foremost line, he successfully repelled all attacks by 2 Russian divisions and, after the enemy had broken through to both the north and south, he and his Bataillon tirelessly defended the completely cut-off village in the time period 19.-21.02.1942.”
