The following press article describes why Christiansen was awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross…
“Korvettenkapitän Christiansen was awarded the Knight’s Cross on the 08.05.1941 for personally sinking 7 merchant ships with 30000 GRT, an enemy torpedo boat during the Norwegian campaign as well as (in conjunction with another ship) two destroyers. More recently, during its combat against the Bolshevik supply lines in the Black Sea, his flotilla has sunk a total of 49 vessels (with over 60000 GRT) and a torpedo boat. As the flotilla commander in the Black Sea, Christiansen personally participated in over 50 sorties. He consistently led his ships from the front as a great example of fighting spirit for his men.”
