On the 23.08.1944 the 3./Sturmgeschütz-Brigade had the mission of holding the village of Sabonesti (northwest of Roman) against strong enemy tank attacks from the flank. On this day a group of 30 Soviet tanks suddenly tried to seize the village, however Oberwachtmeister Dath deployed his Zug of Sturmgeschütze with such skill that 14 enemy tanks were destroyed. Dath and his crew personally destroyed 6 of this total. This success helped enable the Germans to build a new frontline.
