The following wartime excerpt describes why Debiel was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberwachtmeister Leo Debiel… successfully defended a hilltop observation post in the Carpathian Mountains against numerous enemy attacks. From here he also directed the fire of his Batterie with great skill, the result being that the enemy’s intended breakthrough attempt failed. The Oberwachtmeister died a heroic death in close combat. He received the Knight’s Cross for his devotion to duty until the last breath.”
Awarded posthumously.
