Awarded for his actions during the fighting in Courland. Here Oberfeldwebel Dilz and his Zug found themselves in the middle of a Soviet penetration, however they held their ground via an all-round defense even as at least 600 Soviets had penetrated to their rear. The steadfastness of this small group was decisive for the course of the combat on this day, and it inspired other units to also give their highest resistance. Dilz would be heavily wounded a few days later, but by then he had done enough to merit him the recognition of his superiors.
