Awarded for the achievements of his unit during the Battle of Britain, Balkans Campaign and Operation Barbarossa. During the Balkans campaign he and his aircraft helped Heer forces to overcome the Metaxas line and inflicted heavy damage during the Allied retreat from Greece, sinking about 87400 GRT worth of shipping and damaging another 68100 GRT. During the fighting around Crete he and his unit sunk 6 destroyers and damaged another 66100 GRT worth of shipping. Later, during Operation Barbarossa, he and his men provided outstanding support to Panzergruppe 3, especially at Kalinin, Suwalki, Vilnius, Vitebsk and Nowogrodek.
