The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Doench received the Knight’s Cross…
“Major Fritz Doench has led his Kampfgruppe with great success in many bold attacks against the strongholds of the British Home Fleet (i.e. Scapa Flow and the Shetland isles) during the previous winter months. In the West he and his unit have inflicted particularly severe damage on the enemy in the Belgian-French coastal area. Major Doench has distinguished himself during all operations through his personal bravery.”
