Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes

Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Generaloberst (General)
Unit:
Oberbefehlshaber 7.Armee
Awarded on:
July 2nd, 1944
Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub
Awarded for commanding the 7. Armee during its initial successes along the Atlantic coastline, specifically for ensuring that some of the Allied objectives were not reached in a timely fashion. An order of the day by Hitler himself (dated 30.06.1944) describes this achievement as follows…

“Through his outstanding leadership of an Armee along the Atlantic coast he has established the preconditions for defending against the Invasion. During the defensive combat he personally helped to prevent the far-reaching plans of the enemy, and in doing so denied them their first objective after the landing.”

It is reasonable to assume that this first objective was the city of Caen.
