The following press article describes the Knight’s Cross action of Erich Domaschk, which took place on the 14.10.1942…

“During the middle of October 1942, following heavy fighting, Domaschk’s Bataillon had advanced as far as the southwestern edge of the heavily defended ‘Dserschinskij’ tractor factory when the attack was called off during the evening, as no further success appeared forthcoming on this day. However Hauptmann Domaschk knew that a Panzer-Abteilung had already forced a penetration into the tractor factory further to the north. As such he made the independent decision to immediately continue the attack in order to take advantage of the situation.

Leading at the head of his Grenadiers, he gave them a compelling example through his outstanding personal bravery. He inspired them through the hard struggle and, after fierce combat, broke the bitter Soviet resistance on the western edge of the factory. However Hauptmann Domaschk was not satisfied even with this great success. Instead, utilizing the disruption among the enemy, he and his Grenadiers launched an assault that reached the bank of the Volga despite the total darkness that had set in by this time.

This bold feat of arms, the success of which is primarily due to the initiative and exemplary personal bravery of Hauptmann Domaschk, decisively facilitated the capture of the entire tractor factory on the next day.”
