Awarded the Knight’s Cross for his leadership of Kampfgeschwader 26, which operated off the coast of Norway primarily against the arctic convoys as well as the port of and railroad leading from Murmansk. Despite the extremely difficult operating conditions, his bomber and heavy fighter units did an outstanding job given the resources available and inflicted heavy damage in their assigned roles.
