Josef was the first soldier from Muenster to be so honoured. Josef was a Sergeant and flew in the HE 111 Bomber in almost every theater of the war.

Josef Howein died at home in Muenster/Gremmendorf, Germany. He is buried closeby at the small cemetery between Gremmendorf and Angelmodde.
