During the final battle for Berlin Oberst Eder commanded the defensive sector F (Spandau and Charlottenburg). The only troops at his disposal were various alarm units, Volkssturm and Hitlerjugend.
On the 25.04.1945 the HJ-Kampfgruppen Pichelsdorf, Reichssportfeld and Heerstraße were gathered together as the HJ-Brigade “Reichsjugendführer Axmann”, and thrown into the battle. They were able to fend off a Soviet thrust towards the Heerstraße train station and hold open the Havel bridges at Pichelsdorf. These were later used for the breakout towards the west.
Oberst Eder would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this and the various other successes he achieved as a sector commander.
