The following wartime excerpt describes why Eggers would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“During the Fourth Battle of Kharkov Unteroffizier Eggers destroyed more than 20 enemy tanks on the 08.08.1943 over the course of an hours-long tank battle. He was thereafter recommended for the award of the Knight’s Cross. By the 21.08.1944 Johann Eggers had destroyed 46 enemy tanks.”
