The following wartime excerpt describes why Eglseer would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalmajor Eglseer heavily influenced the Uman pocket battle through his personal initiative. By allowing his left wing Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 91 to swing right towards Podwissokoje via Polonisteje he interdicted the last road to the south for the not-yet encircled enemy forces. Through this the ring around the Uman pocket was more or less closed, which in turn enabled the destruction of the 6th and 12th Russian armies.”
