During the heavy defensive battles in the Briansk-Gomel area during September/October 1943, Oberleutnant Ertel destroyed 27 enemy tanks in the space of a few days with his Sturmgeschütz. Despite being wounded twice in the process he remained with his men and continued to command his Batterie. He would later receive the Knight’s Cross for the bravery and leadership qualities he demonstrated during this time.
