August 21st, 1941
On the 24.07.1941 Leutnant Ewald and his Zug, together with other German units, had the mission of eliminating a series of Soviet bunkers southwest of Korosten. By independently modifying the plan for carrying out the mission Leutnant Ewald succeeded in eliminating 3 hostile bunkers. In doing so he secured the preconditions for the swift elimination of the other 4 such bunkers on the same heavily fortified hill. This in turn cleared the way for the further advance of the Infanterie-Regiment 526.

For his actions on this day Leutnant Ewald would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
