The following special order written by the commander of the 11. Infanterie-Division describes why Obergefreiter Fels would receive the Knight’s Cross…
“During the fighting in the Dorpat area Fels demonstrated fanatical resistance when Soviet forces penetrated the lines on both sides of him. Fighting all alone with his MG, he engaged a company of enemy soldiers and destroyed it down to the last man. Through his fearless steadfastness in a critical situation he prevented the enemy penetration from expanding into a breakthrough at Dorpat along the boundary with the right neighbouring regiment. In the process he forced the enemy to flee and brought about a major defensive success for his Bataillon. Through his actions it was possible to create a new frontline and repel further enemy attacks.
The exemplary attitude of the brave and courageous Obergefreiter Fels has now been recognized through a high award. The Division is especially proud of its youngest Knight’s Cross Holder, as he is also the first man from its enlisted ranks to hold this high award. The Division congratulates the by now wounded Obergefreiter Fels, and wishes him a speedy recovery and return to his old Kompanie.”
