The following press article describes why Fiedler would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“On his own initiative - Leutnant Alex Fiedler awarded the Knight’s Cross:
Leutnant Fiedler, born in Rust (Hungary) in 1922, delivered an act of courage that contributed to the holding of an important position during the fighting along the Adriatic front. In this time powerful enemy forces crossed over a river between a railway and an important road and then turned a house into a firm strongpoint. Leutnant Fiedler decided to place himself at the head of 15 men from his Zug and with this force he stormed into the flank of the consolidating enemy. By firing all available weapons it was possible to totally surprise the enemy and inflict heavy losses upon them. 2 officers, 3 NCOs and 54 men were taken prisoner. 52 enemy dead were counted on the battlefield. The brave deed by the 22 year old Leutnant, a bearer of the Iron Cross First Class, Close Combat Clasp in Bronze and Wound Badge in Silver, secured the entire friendly position.”
