During the hard defensive battles of the 78. Sturm-Division south of Orel in March 1943 Leutnant Erich Fischer and his Württemberger Grenadier-Kompanie managed to block a coordinated attack by two Soviet rifle regiments. On the following night he and his men repelled 11 further hostile attacks launched in strength of up to two regiments, and over the course of the whole night he destroyed any broken-in Soviet forces with personally led counterthrusts. He would receive the Knight’s Cross for this achievement.
