Biography

Otto Fondermann went into service in March 1926. In September 1934 he became officer. After the Second World War he joined the Bundeswehr and retired as Oberst.

The following wartime excerpt describes why Fondermann would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 03.08.1941 Hauptmann Fondermann had the lion’s share of both the capture of Perwomaiske as well as the undamaged Bug bridges that were vital for the continuation of battle in the Ukraine. As the combat report and the statement of the Brigade commander makes clear, Fondermann applied himself to the utmost despite strong enemy activity, and thanks to this he was able to take the Bug bridge before it was blown up by the enemy. Kilometres-long enemy columns were cut off from their retreat as a result of this battle-deciding action, which also had the effect of facilitating the continued German thrust to the south/southeast.”
