On the 19.03.1942 the Soviets launched a breakthrough attempt near Dschakoj, attacking on a frontline width of 600 metres with 44 tanks. Only one German Pak stood in their way, and its Zugführer and Geschützführer were quickly cut down. Nonetheless the gunner, Obergefreiter Fraps, kept his calm and allowed the lead enemy tanks to approach. In quick succession he destroyed one 40-ton, three 32-ton and one 25-ton tank. This resulted in the collapse of the attack.
Two days later, just before the onset of night, Romanian soldiers located nearby alerted Obergefreiter Fraps to the presence of Soviet tanks. In the attack which followed Fraps once again destroyed a number of hostile tanks, including 2 at the last moment. Soon after this, on the 24.03.1942, Obergefreiter Fraps again destroyed 5 tanks all by himself.
His courage and determination resulted in the defeat of all Soviet offensive thrusts during this time here. In total he destroyed 11 enemy tanks in just three days, this while his Pak was positioned all on its own. He would receive the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this singular achievement.
