- Unit:
- Kommandeur, I. Bataillon, Grenadier-Regiment 220, 58. Infanterie-Division, Heer
- Awarded on:
- September 5th, 1944
Awarded for helping to close the gap between two Armee-Korps with his Bataillon during the late August of 1944. During this battle the Bataillon was attached to the Führer-Grenadier-Regiment 551. On the 28.08.1944 its acting commander, Major Beutner, wrote the following letter of praise to the Bataillon. It provides a good glimpse into why Frey was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“The I./220 under the superb leadership of Hauptmann Frey repeatedly distinguished itself through its offensive spirit and splendid courage during the fighting around Ergli, which led to the capture of the city and the creation/expansion of a bridgehead. This readiness for duty is all the more noteworthy considering that the Bataillon fought under the control of a foreign Regiment.
I give Hauptmann Frey and his brave soldiers my thanks and highest recognition.”
