The following article from the 16. Armee’s newspaper describes why Max Friedrich would receive the Knight’s Cross…
“The Bravest of our Armee - Unbreakable Steadfastness:
During the heavy defensive battles northwest of Newel Obergefreiter Max Friedrich, acting squad leader in a Grenadier Bataillon, particularly distinguished himself through his decisiveness and outstanding bravery. The Bataillon was preparing to retreat, but was receiving heavy enemy fire from all manner of weapons. The Soviets launched a sudden assault against the flank with strong infantry forces. Here Obergefreiter Friedrich was in position with his light MG. He recognized the danger of the friendly front being rolled up and proceeded to hold off the enemy until nightfall arrived and the planned withdrawal movement had begun. Acting on his own initiative, he again took over the security of the Bataillon and defeated 4 Soviet attacks launched in company strength despite the strong enemy mortar and anti-tank gun fire. In the process he inflicted bloody losses on the foe through accurate MG fire. He was the last to leave the position after the Bataillon had reached its designated area, fighting his way through to the Bataillon during an hours-long night march through the pursuing Soviet soldiers. Thanks to his circumspection and unshakable steadfastness the withdrawal movement was carried out with barely any friendly casualties. On the 15.03.1944 the Führer awarded him the Knight’s Cross.”
