During the midday hours of the 26.01.1944 the I./Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 13 under the acting leadership of Hauptmann Fritz (its designated commander had had to take over command of the Regiment) commenced a strike to the east. After breaking the Soviet resistance along the great north-south road in the area the Bataillon reached Hill 281.2 (north of Wysselki) in a swift thrust. With this the Bataillon got into the rear of the Soviet forces at Jassenki, and would be able to gradually establish contact with the Divisional elements fighting in Sosowo and Sosoff. On the next day the village of Wysselki was captured, and with this the groundwork for the encirclement of Soviet forces at Gaissin was created.
Hauptmann Fritz would receive the Knight’s Cross for his leadership achievements during this battle.
