The following excerpt describes why Erich Fronhöfer received the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 25.06.1941 Oberstleutnant Fronhöfer was ordered to break through strong enemy forces near Utena that were blocking the path of friendly Divisions advancing to Dünaburg. Oberstleutnant Fronhöfer employed his Abteilungen with such skill that he succeeded in crushing the enemy defense. Then, on his own initiative, he thrusted beyond his ordered attack objective and broke through to a depth of 35 km. This penetration was a great success for the conduct of the battle, as it enabled the remaining elements of the Division near Utena to conduct a swift march in the direction of Dünaburg.”

Submitted on 15th July 1941.
Preliminary document on 25th July 1941 to Heeresgruppe Nord.
