“For having distinguished himself by extraordinary acts of courage, tact en loyalty during the occupation of the Netherlands, assigned to the Staff of District 9 (Limburg) of the resistance organisation known as the Ordedienst.

Although prematurely forced to leave military service, this former officer, despite his severe physical handicap and in accordance with his officer’s oath, has organised and led the underground resistance with unabating energy and will power, on his own initiative as Chief Inspector of the Central Control Agency and subsequently as a member of the Ordedienst.

Using the car, assigned to him as Civil Servant of the Central Control Agency, he, with exemplary courage and tact, has taken to safety numerous members of Allied aircrews and Allied prisoners of war who had escaped from Germany, for which he was awarded posthumously by the American, British and French Governments. He displayed the same courage and willingness to bring the ultimate offer in his last days alive when he, on hearing that two of his subordinates had been arrested and were about to be executed if he did not report to the authorities, he immediately turned himself in and courageously gave his life together with three companions before an enemy firing squad at WELL on May 22nd, 1943, shouting “Long live our Fatherland, Long live our Queen” thereby imbueing his fellow sufferers with courage until the final moment.”
