Captain Browder was engaged in furnishing air support to amphibious attack groups landing on the shores of Leyte Gulf, Philippine Islands, from 18 to 29 October 1944. On 25 October 1944, while his ship was under almost constant air attack from suicide dive bombers, he repeatedly launched flight after flight against the enemy fleet approaching Leyte Gulf. These planes damaged the enemy ships and contributed to their turning away from this, the Battle of Samar Island. During this period he fought his ship so skillfully that only minor damage was received from repeated enemy air attacks. His conduct was in accordance with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States."
