For his work in Soemba between 1910 and 1916, the then Luitenant-kolonel of the Dutch East Indian army (KNIL) was decorated with the Knight 4th Class Militaire Willemsorde.
During the Second World War he served in the resistance with the Ordedienst (armed resistance).
On 8th August 1942 he was imprisoned in the hostage camp St. Michielsgestel, but was released on 15th December. He then becam the Commander of the Distirct 6 (Veluwe) of the Ordedienst. Together with fourteen other people he was arrested on 30th September 1944 as result of the refusel of many people to work on military objects on behalf of the German occupier on 29th September 1944. Barendsen was, together with seven others, executed on 2nd October 1944 at the vacinity of the abandoned Jewish mentally disabled clinic "Het Apeldoornse Bos".
